The word ‘attitude’ derives from the Italian word ‘attitudine’ which means disposition or posture. It is the way a person views something or tends to behave towards it, often in an evaluative way and this leads to his usual temperament or frame of mind.
You can have a positive attitude, a neutral attitude or negative attitude…meaning you can view things positively, negatively or neutrally.
Now, where does this attitude come from. I think it comes from our beliefs about the truth and nature of things. It is a reflection of our beliefs. In life, there are ups and downs. If you have a setback in life, a helpful way to deal with it would be:
Life has its setbacks. I did not expect it. However I will not quit. With the help of God, my family and myself, I shall get through it and come out of it successful.(POSITIVE ATTITUDE)
rather than saying:
Oh, why does this happen to me? I knew it will happen? I can never succeed in anything? What a failure has come into my life.
We have to remember that we have the power to choose. When something happens to us and when we respond to it, we can always choose how we respond. We can always take the time to respond appropriately. True, some situations will require an immediate response, and we may not have time, but having the right attitude, thinking and beliefs will help us move in the right direction. Our destiny lies in the choices we make.
So if we are thinking in a negative way, we have the power to change to think in a positive way and apply them to our goals and expectations in life. You cannot have a positive attitude and be miserable, they are not compatible.
Let us now see, how everything happens in a logical way:
Stage 1: Something happens
Stage 2: You interpret the event
Stage 3: The situation is analysed and filtered through your beliefs and attitudes
Stage 4: You have an emotional response
Stage 5: More likely than not, you express it in a physical reaction( say, you are happy or you get upset and angry)
As William James said,
Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their mind, can change the outer aspects of their lives.
If your attitude is negative or you think you are a failure, you will interpret everything that happens as a validation of that attitude and belief. You are in 100% control of your attitude and remember that 80% of the skills you need to be successful in life are attitude based.
Just always have a positive attitude-it is that simple.
