This post has my personal notes and reflections of the chapter called The Supermind as Creator from the The Life Divine written by Sri Aurobindo.
There is The One; the Divine from which everything has come, but which is still and quiet, the eternal Void filled with Existence, Consciousness and Bliss all at once and at the same time but is quiet and unmanifest.
On the other hand is this world with so many things, the mind, the feelings, the body. Here everything is different, some look beautiful to us, some look ugly…so much variations.
Can there be an intermediary which is filled with Existence, Consciousness and Bliss and which gives rise to the world with so many things, but it is still aware and conscious and feels and wills the Divine Power, Existence, Consciousness and Bliss in all these things and thereby transforms each of these things to the Divine Existence, Consciousness and Bliss but does not merge or annihilate these things. It means a consciousness that is perfect in all respects and gives rise to things which are prefect in all respects despite being varied.
It is like this:
It has the knowledge of the One, but is able to draw out of the One its hidden multitudes; it manifests the Many, but does not lose itself in their differentiations.
This means when we are situated in the consciousness of the Supermind we are in the consciousness of the One and the Many at the same time.
The One is One and cannot be the Many. The Many is Many and cannot become One unless it annihilates itself. But in the Supermind they come together. The One is what is called Sat-Chit-Ananda. Existence-Consciousness-Bliss. One because existence is consciousness is bliss. The Many is our mind. Sees things as separate and discrete. Cannot see itself as One unless it abolishes itself.
This mind itself cannot know. It is only a preparatory function. It can do analysis of an object and views that analysis as knowledge. It is better than Matter which is quite inert and cannot do such analysis . But if we want to know things as they are, we have to go beyond the mind. We have to go higher planes or the highest plane of Supermind.
So you have the indivisible One, the multiplicity of the world and then something that develops the multiplicity while still keeping the oneness.
So far what has happened is that we say that the indivisible One or the Supermind is God and we who at the moment are not situated in the consciousness of the indivisible One or the Supermind is man. This is true but we say that the gulf between these consciousness cannot be bridged. This is false.
We can bridge the consciousness and reach the consciousness of the Supermind or the Divine and also bring that consciousness into the Mind and Matter. Then man becomes Divine and realises the truth of everything being Divine. That was the work of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.
Let us conclude with the words of Sri Aurobindo, so beautifully and clearly written:
….the divine and creative Supermind in which all is one in being, consciousness, will and delight, yet with an infinite capacity of differentiation that deploys but does not destroy the unity,—in which Truth is the substance and Truth rises in the Idea and Truth comes out in the form and there is one truth of knowledge and will, one truth of self-fulfilment and therefore of delight; for all self-fulfilment is satisfaction of being. Therefore, always, in all mutations and combinations a self-existent and inalienable harmony.
