How To Live A Life Of Significance?

The fact that you are reading this means that you are living. Living does not mean just existing. Living means to live with significance. What does this significance mean? It is difficult to transmit this to another person, but some guideposts can help:

1. Dream: You have to got to have a dream. If you do not have a dream, how are you going to make a dream come true? When you lose your dreams, you die. That is why we have so many people who are living but are actually dead and don’t even know it. They are living in the memories of the past. Stop living in the past. Get a life. Dream a new dream.

2. Act: There is no point in dreaming and not doing anything towards it.  We must learn to act. No one is going to compel you to work. You have to want to work and the dream is the stimulus that will help you to start.

3. Grow up: There is a giant difference between growing older and growing up. If you are twenty-five years old and just lie in bed for one whole year and do not do one productive thing, you will become twenty-six years old. Anybody can grow older. That does not take any talent or ability. We should all continue to grow up by keeping at least one major dream alive. We are as young as we feel and age is just a number.

4. Leave no regrets: The only people who fear death are those with regrets. This means usually that we should really live and not just accumulate things. You want God to know that you were really here and that you really lived. Too many love things and use people. We must love people and use things. All of the greatest accomplishments, successes and possessions mean nothing if you are alone and only making a living instead of a difference.

Keeping these words in mind can light our way in life:

Promise yourself today to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind;
To look on the bright side of everything and make your dreams come true;
To think the best, to forget the mistakes of the past, and to press on to better things;
To give so much time to improving yourself that you don’t have the time to criticize others;
To be too large for worries, too noble for anger, too large for fear,
And too happy to permit the presence of trouble;
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this force to the world
Not in loud words but in great works.

James Talmage

If we can live this way, we would have run life’s race to the best of our ability and won the race because we reached the highest measure of our full potential and left everybody we met in better shape that we found them. It is never late to begin this journey towards significance and the journey never ends. Then we truly understand that the purpose of our life is to become significant in the best way we possibly can and that this is extremely personal and not dependent on fame, power, or riches that we accumulate in life.
